Beschreibung:

In Crommelin, John Coe offers fascinating new insights into the naval and political career of World War II hero and perennial candidate John Crommelin. Based on a collection of never-before-seen materials from the National Naval Aviation Museum, Crommelin examines Crommelin's role as executive officer on board the USS Enterprise (CV-6), his assignments as chief of staff aboard the ill-fated USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56), his command of the USS Saipan (CVL-48), and his involvement in various conspiracy theories including the Green Bowl Society, attacks on the newly formed Department of Defense, and a post-naval career in politics defined by Crommelin's own anti-Semitism and commitment to white supremacy.
The book begins with the events aboard the Enterprise during which time Crommelin established his reputation as an outstanding officer and leader of men. Soon after, during his command of the USS Saipan, Crommelin began his downward spiral through obsessions with various conspiracy theories. In his final years, Crommelin was honored by several institutions, including the Alabama Military Hall of Fame. He also spent some of these last years recasting well known facts of naval aviation, an effort the author believes was clearly motivated by Crommelin's own desire for self-aggrandizement. This biography presents a full picture of Crommelin in all his complexity, both hero and pariah.
